Are you booking a flight and wondering which airline to choose? Where should you sit? What are the procedures for flying with your Service Dog or regular pet in cabin? We're here to help! Let's explore your options and we will give you our recommendations based on our experiences.
Flying With Your Service Animal
Let's start here as most of the airlines have the same procedure. Once you have chosen your preferred airline and flight you will need to fill out the US Department of Transportation Service Animal Air Transportation Form which can be found on your airline's website and submit it to your airline prior to your flight. Once approved you will be able to fly with your Service Animal free of charge.
Which Airline Should I Fly?
This is a judgement call based on your location. Some airlines offer more routes to different places based on where you are flying. We used Delta for many years when we were based out of New York but now that we are in Chicago we are starting to fly more with United as they have more nonstop flights in our area. We will ALWAYS choose a nonstop flight vs a connecting with layovers.
What Time of Day is Best For Our Flight?
Get up early and take the first one out if available. This is especially true during the holidays. I know getting up early is hard but these are the flights with the best on time departure stats. Even if there have been delays the day before, everything is usually sorted out and back on schedule by the first morning flight. Short answer is these are the flights that leave on time! Also everyone will be tired and just want to sleep on the flight so your odds are better in the passenger behavior category. Plus you will get to your destination sooner and the fun can begin earlier!
Where Should I Sit?
As much as we would all love to fly first class all the time it can get very expensive. So here's what we do and again this a judgement call based on preference. We prefer a bulkhead seat because they usually have the most legroom so you and your pup will be more comfortable. We also recommend choosing the upgrade to Economy Plus if you are able. It's a little bit more expensive but you get the extra space and on some airlines complimentary snacks and drinks. Delta even offers complimentary adult beverages in their Economy Plus (Comfort Plus) section.
Can I Board Early? I Need Extra Time To Get Myself and my Service Dog Settled.
Absolutely! When you get to your gate just politely ask the agent and they should be able to accommodate you. Be kind and they will help you out as best they can. Everyone wants a stress free experience.
Where Can I Find The Service Dog Relief Areas at my Airport?
Go into your airlines app and under airport maps there should be an option to search for Service Animal Relief Areas. Please note that some areas may be outside the airport near the pick up/ drop off zones so if you need help just ask a gate agent.
Come fly with us as we check out different airlines and try to find the best seats.
